Chapter Six

Tess obeyed reluctantly at first, but she had to grudgingly admit the hot water soothed her frazzled nerves and made her feel more human. By the time she’d slipped on a pair of skintight leather pants and a loose blouse of pale, patterned silk, she was starting to feel almost good. A spritz of the boutique French perfume Helena favored on her had her feeling downright sexy, and she popped in her contacts and did her makeup in a much better mood than she’d been in before.

She savored the slow, appreciative way Helena looked her over when she emerged from the bedroom.

“I must admit, darling, I’m tempted to keep you here,” she purred. “But I’ve already taken too much from you as it is.”

The idea of letting Helena ravage her was starting to sound more and more appealing. To hell with her iron levels.

“You can, if you want,” Tess murmured. “I feel fine now.”

“Absolutely not.” Helena chuckled. “Eat your frites.”

Tess did as she was told—they were delicious, as was everything else she’d eaten so far. Helena managed not to rush her too much as she lingered with Tess at the marble-topped kitchen counter, legs crossed elegantly, feet in high-heeled black booties.

Helena opted for the prosaic comfort of a rideshare to take them to the club that would be her hunting ground. A smile and a confident declaration that, yes, they were on the VIP list was all it took to get them past the bouncer, and soon they were enveloped in throbbing bass and darkness shot through with laser lights and the sparkling reflections of dancers in the mirrored walls. Helena escorted Tess to the bar and set her up with a cocktail, something involving vodka and passionfruit, and ordered a drink for herself, a little whiskey in a rocks glass. She touched their glasses together and smiled, her lips bearing a faint pink gloss to obscure their paleness. Her eye makeup was dramatic black liquid liner that made her look mysterious and powerful, a painted queen from an Egyptian tomb.

“If whiskey tastes half as bad as it smells, I’m surprised you’re not dead by now, dragă,” she said cheerfully. She had to lean in close for Tess to hear her.

“Well, it’s not exactly O negative, but it gets the job done.” Tess chuckled and took a pink, sweet sip.

“Dance with me,” Helena said then in the same cold, brusque voice she would use to order Tess to her knees. Tess gulped and allowed herself to be led into the swirling mass of dancers. She wondered if it all seemed silly and frivolous to someone as old as Helena, who had seen the turning of centuries and stalked a horse-drawn world. Even Tess had to admit she felt a little too old for places like this, but Helena seemed perfectly at ease. It was something Tess loved about her, her ability to be fascinated by everyday life, the tawdry and the mundane as much as the beautiful. In her lower moments, Tess wondered if this wasn’t what made Helena able to love her.
